The UKs largest foodstore retailer Sainsburys took the initiative in developing a flagship, environmentally innovative and responsibly designed building, serving the local the local Greenwich Peninsula, a previously neglected inner city area on the edge of the Millennium village. Through four years from concept to completion, this latest addition to the Millennium village intended to attract people from the local community, whilst simultaneously encouraging people from the surrounding smaller towns.
A successful planning submission resulted in a an acceptance of a urban regeneration bid, amongst several of the UK's most popular food retailers. Greenwich Council approved details of two stores in January 1999 and Sainsbury's began construction immediately.
